The rate of set pieces in an event like Euro 2016 has always been the subject of studies. In short and very well balanced competitions, every situation that can be planned must be maximised to your favour in order to prevent wasting a lot of energy and to try to swing the fate of the match to your favour.

Of the 108 goals scored in France (an average of 2.12 per match), 28 stemmed from set pieces (throw-ins, direct free kicks, indirect free kicks, corner kicks), which is 25.9% of the total. If we add the 8 converted penalty kicks during Euro 2016, we add a rate of 33.3% of goals produced in situations with game play stopped (set pieces plus penalty kicks).

Analysing the composition of the goals stemming from set pieces in more detail, we discover how corner kicks were the most recurrent situation with 15 goals (53.5%), followed by indirect free kicks (7, 25%) and direct free kicks (4, 14.2%). Bringing up last place is the throw-in, resulting in a goal only for Iceland on two occasions (7%).

France is the national team that scored more goals from set pieces (4), whereas Germany is the formation with the highest percentage of goals stemming from these situations of the teams that scored more than three goals (42.7%).

Bleus and Mannschaft are also the most prolific in corner kick situations (3 for the French, 2 for the Germans, equal to Portugal and Switzerland), a fact that would seem to indicate a solution that their game plan actively seeks out. Also taking into consideration the fact that the goals resulting from corner kicks represent 13.8% of the total Euro 2016 goals scored, let’s review the data by team:

  • 108 total goals, with an average of 2.12 per match.
  • 28 stemming from set pieces (free kicks and corners) – 25.9% of the total
  • 8 from penalty kicks – 7.4% of the total
  • 33.3% of the goals were produced from stopped game play (set pieces plus penalty kicks)
