In Italy, 4-3-3 is a formation historically associated with Zdenek Zeman, who believed that it was the best way to set up the pitch in order to continuously form triangles and generate multiple passing solutions. In recent seasons, a Zeman pupil has been emerging who, after years of work at Sassuolo, managed to forge his own way, finding a balance between the defensive and offensive phases: Eusebio di Francesco.

Sassuolo is a quick squad and the synergy between Domenico Berardi, a left-footed right wing, and Nicola Sansone, a right-footed left wing, has been refined over the years. The two strive to exploit the space behind the opposing midfield, converging toward the centre with rapid combinations, and even when Berardi doesn’t play the principles are the same.

Three forwards are also Gianpiero Gasperini’s calling card, although he prefers a 3-4-3 formation. Here, at the wings, Perotti and Suso, move toward the centre simultaneously, whereas the striker, Pavoletti, stays wide. The defence is forced to make a decision: whether to cover the centre, as Inter does above, creating space for the midfielders to cut in laterally, or to cover the width, as Palermo does here, losing the distances in the central area.

[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]
Other coaches, such as Maurizio Sarri, prefer to have the striker operating between the lines, freeing up space for the wings to cut in to the central area. On this occasion, Higuaín draws a defender out of the area and Callejón moves into that space.

[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=”]
There are also more traditional versions of the 4-3-3 formation, like Eddy Reja’s Atalanta. In this case, the wings have the task of playing mainly along the sidelines, advancing the ball by dribbling or making a cross from the base line, whereas the remaining two forwards attack the near and far post respectively.

Different coaches, different players, different offensive combinations. Even in the use of formations with three forwards, the Italian Serie A offers different interpretations of the roles, maintaining that variety of tactical solutions that characterises it.
