Winning the World Cup and the European Cup two years apart is no easy task, but Germany’s goal is still to prevail even within the borders of the continent. Joachim Loew has a significant challenge ahead, especially if we consider some of the problems that came out the day after the Rio de Janeiro win. The Mannschaft qualified for the Euro 2016 tournament winning Group D (22 points out of 30), but if, of the teams that went through as first, only England scored the most (31 goals compared to 24), only the Czech Republic conceded the most (14 compared to 9). Did the German solidity falter?

The English draw scoring play will be remembered for Vardy’s back heel shot. But tactically, Loew should be worried about something else. Barkley got the ball on his own midfield and Kroos moved up to press him, leaving the central area uncovered. Emre Can did the same. But when Barkley passed the ball back to Alli and a triangle was formed with Henderson, none of the German midfielders went back to their respective positions. That meant all Barkley needed to do was complete a pass (in the meantime moving toward the space) to launch a dangerous attack.

Giroud’s goal in the match against France exposes Germany‘s current weak points.  A cross to Martial on the other side, wide on the left wing, led to two one-on-one defeats. The first one was against the right fullback (Rudiger) and the second against the centre midfielder (Kroos). And then, to finish, the cross to the centre led to the scoring touch.

In the last match against Italy, Loew changed the team set up, going from a 3-4-3 with Kroos (and Ozil alongside him) firmly set ahead of the defence. This was a very offensive solution that was strongly reminiscent of Bayern Munich‘s recent tactical formation. In terms of game play and solidity, the team response was excellent.

Conclusions:

  • Germany is still trying to find replacements for Lahm – who left the national team at the end of the World Cup – and especially for Schweinsteiger – who has only played in two official matches since then.
  • The Mannschaft matches demonstrate the lack of a centre midfielder who can bring balance to the team like they had in the last World Cup after moving Schweinsteiger in front of the defence.
  • Loew cannot afford not to field the many midfielders he has on the roster. But at the same time, he is forced to find defensive solutions that can provide more balance to the overall formation. The 3-4-3 he used against Italy could be the way out.
